TikTok, or Douyin, as it is known in China, is a social media application created on the basis of Musical.ly, which provides live broadcasting as well as creating and sharing videos. It was released by ByteDance[4][5] in September 2016. Merging with Musical.ly

On November 9, 2017, TikTok parent company ByteDance spent $1 billion to acquire the Shanghai-based startup Musical.ly, an American youth social media platform with an office in Santa Monica. Seeking to capitalize on the young user base of the US digital platform, TikTok merged with this venture company on August 2, 2018, bringing together existing accounts and data on Musical.ly into a single app to create a larger video community.

Douyin

Banned in the United States

US President Donald Trump announced that they will ban TikTok on August 1, 2020.[27] Trump signed a similar decision against the WeChat application owned by the Chinese multinational company Tencent.

In June 2021, President Biden signed an executive order revoking the Trump administration's ban on TikTok and instead ordered the Secretary of Commerce to investigate the app to determine whether it poses a threat to U.S. national security.

India

TikTok, along with 223 other Chinese apps, was completely banned in India by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on June 29, 2020. The ban was made permanent in January 2021.
