Status

The legal status of sex workers may change depending on the country and region. In some places some of these activities are legal while in others they are illegal (example: in some countries prostitution is done under government control, in others it is completely illegal). In countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium and Turkey, separate streets or houses where sex workers can work are allocated and are partially legal. Even in countries such as the United States, England, Ireland and Finland where advanced sex work is legal, sex workers are often subjected to ill-treatment. Sex work is an area where there is no job security, and workers are excluded from social circles due to social norms. The common conclusion in all regions is that this sector is open to abuse.

Sex worker wants to have basic human and labor rights like other working people (Weitzer 1991). The Canadian Sex Workers Association states that the regulation in the country is heavier for sex workers than other branches of work, the protection is insufficient in matters such as employment/removal, and the right to establish a professional association is more difficult.

Legal status

Sex workers in the Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand are recognized by the state and protected more strictly than in other countries. This protection prevents both workers and customers from acting more comfortably and dangerously (eg use of condoms, sexual assault).

Growing sex tourism is a problem for the sex industry. The illegal employment and distribution of underage children[4] is a serious problem. Legal sex tourism, on the other hand, contributes to the economy of some cities and these regions are known for these aspects and attract tourists.

Demography of sex workers

The majority of sex workers are heterosexual young women.[5] The number of sex workers in transvestites and transsexuals is higher than in heterosexual women. HIV transmission rates of transgender sex workers are also higher, and in a study conducted on female Indian sex workers, illiteracy and low social status[6] were found to be common.

Name

The word "prostitute" is derived from the Arabic word فاحشه (faḥisha), meaning "raging" or "shameless". It was first used in Turkish in the Divan literature of Enderunlu Vasıf.[1] Slang words are also used for prostitutes, such as the word "bitch", which derives from the Persian روسپی (rospī).[2][3]

The second meaning of the word, "extremism and excessive behavior"[4], is gradually disappearing from use in modern Turkish.

The legal status of prostitution varies from country to country. At one end of the spectrum, prostitution is punishable by the death penalty, while at the other end it is partially or fully legal.

In a few countries (see map below), prostitution, i.e. sex for money, is not prohibited, but prostitution-related activities such as owning/working in a brothel or chattering may be illegal, and the scope and severity of these laws vary by country. For example, in Brazil, it is perfectly legal for adults to work as prostitutes and prostitutes may receive state pensions[30], but it is illegal to operate a brothel or otherwise employ a prostitute.[31] On the other hand, in some countries such as Canada, sex for money is legal, but the aforementioned activities and other activities such as seeking clients in public are illegal[32], so prostitution can be difficult without breaking a law.

Unlike the aforementioned countries, prostitution is illegal in most countries. In nearly every Muslim country, most African and Asian countries, and many Eastern European countries, prostitution is illegal and the penalties are fines (eg Russia[37]), imprisonment (eg Afghanistan[38]), flogging (eg Saudi Arabia[38]). ) or in some countries such as Sudan.[39]

Despite laws prohibiting prostitution, law enforcement against prostitution may be lax or virtually non-existent. For example, in Thailand, prostitution is legally prohibited, but in practice it is tolerated by the authorities[38]; Today, Thailand is one of the world's top destinations for sex tourism, and red light neighborhoods such as Soi Cowboy in Bangkok are world-renowned.[40][41]

Prostitution is legal in Turkey and it is regulated by Article 227[1] of the Turkish Penal Code Law No. 5237. According to Article 8 of the Passport Law[2], people who are not allowed to enter Turkey include "prostitutes and those who make a living by prostituting women, those who trade white women and smugglers of any kind". Recently, in big cities, prostitutes have been penalized in accordance with Article 32 of the Law on Misdemeanors [4], based on the authority given by the Regulation on Combating Venereal Diseases.[5] Article 32 of the Misdemeanors Law provides for "an administrative fine to be imposed on a person who violates the lawful order given by the competent authorities due to judicial proceedings or for the purpose of protecting public order or general health". While penalties are imposed on promoters and customers, not prostitutes, except for immigrants, in modern countries, the rationale for using this law against prostitutes in Turkey is controversial.[6] In addition, illegal prostitution activities are punishable by a maximum prison sentence of 1 year. In some cities such as Ankara and Bursa, the reason for the demolition of brothels is not because of a crime, but because their lands were expropriated.[7][8]

Striptease clubs are available in Turkey. Strip clubs must also be licensed, strippers must be registered and have regular health checks. All persons entering strip clubs must be legally at least 18 years old.

In 2008, activists and sex workers in Turkey decided to establish Turkey's first sex workers union.[9]

(1)

Anyone who encourages, facilitates, procures or shelters a child for this purpose, or mediates the child's prostitution, is sentenced to imprisonment from four years to ten years and a judicial fine of up to five thousand liras. Preparatory actions for the commission of this crime are also punished as a completed crime.

Anyone who encourages someone to commit prostitution, facilitates it, or mediates or provides a place for prostitution is punished with imprisonment from two to four years and a judicial fine up to three thousand days. Making a living, partially or completely, by benefiting from the earnings of the person dragged into prostitution, is considered an incentive to prostitution.

(3)

The person who brings people into the country for the purpose of prostitution or makes people leave the country is punished according to the above paragraphs.

(4)

According to the paragraphs above, the penalty to be imposed on a person who uses force or threat, deceives, or induces someone to commit prostitution, is increased from half to two times.

(5)

In the event that the crimes defined in the above paragraphs are committed by spouse, parent, brother-in-law, sibling, adoptive, guardian, educator, teacher, caregiver, other persons who are obliged to protect and supervise, or by abuse of influence provided by public office or service relationship, The penalty to be imposed is increased by half.

(6)

In the event that these crimes are committed within the framework of an organizational activity established for the purpose of committing a crime, the penalty to be imposed according to the above paragraphs is increased by half.

(7)

Due to these crimes, security measures specific to legal persons are imposed on them.

(8)

The person driven into prostitution is subjected to treatment or therapy.

Popular culture

On February 17, 2001, Matild Manukyan, the patroness of brothels and one of the richest women in the country, passed away. Manukyan ran a chain of 32 brothels.[15]
