Etymology
The science of sexuality, which has social, cultural, political, spiritual and religious aspects that affect physiological, psychological, interpersonal relations between people, is sexology (or sexology). In the age we live in, human sexuality is no longer just a natural and physiological phenomenon and has literally turned into commerce. This sector, called porn or adult, has become a sector where billions of dollars are turned. Sexual orientation is an enduring personal quality that leads people to feel romantic or sexual attraction (or both) towards the opposite sex, same-sex or gender, or more than one gender. The term sexual preference largely overlaps with sexual orientation, but is often distinguished in psychological research.[9] A person who identifies as bisexual, for example, may prefer one gender over the other.[10] In addition, sexual preference may suggest a voluntary choice[9][11][12], but the scientific consensus is that sexual orientation is not a choice.[13][14][15][16]
There is no consensus among scientists as to why a person develops a particular sexual orientation, but they advocate the theory that it arises as a result of a complex interaction of genetic, hormonal and environmental factors.[1][13][16][17] However, experts prefer biologically based theories about the causes of sexual orientation.[18] These theories point to genetic factors, early stages of development in the womb or their combined effects.[14] In addition, there is no solid evidence indicating that sexual orientation is affected by early childhood experiences and parental upbringing.[14] Sexual behaviors and home environment or common living space between the same sexes have no effect on men and have a minor effect on women.[19] Research over the last few decades has shown that sexual orientation varies over a continuous interval between purely opposite-sex orientation and purely same-sex orientation.[1]

Most definitions of sexual orientation include psychological (such as the direction of one's erotic desire) or behavioral (related to the desired person's sexuality). Some definitions are based on a person's self-description (identity).

Researchers have identified several biological factors that are likely to be linked to the development of sexual orientation, including genes, prenatal hormones, and brain structure.
Scientists believed that sexual orientation is not determined by a single factor, that it is a combination of genetic, hormonal and environmental factors[1][13] and that biological factors are related to the complex interaction of genetic factors with the early uterine environment[14], and they adopted more biological theories. .[13] Scientists believe that sexual orientation is not a choice.[13][14][15][21] The person does not choose to be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual or asexual. There is no substantial evidence that early childhood experiences, family upbringing, sexual abuse, or bad events affect sexual orientation, but studies have found that parents' thoughts about any sexual orientation can affect how a child experiences any sexual orientation-related behavior.[1] [13][14][22][23]
Previously, homosexuality was thought to be caused by bad experiences with the family or a wrong psychological development, but these assumptions are based on misinformation and prejudice.[2] Current research seeks biological explanations for the formation of sexual orientation[13], but no repeated scientific research supports the existence of a specific biological etiology of sexual orientation.[1][13] But scientific research has found some biological differences in heterosexual and homosexual people. These biological differences may have the same root cause as the formation of sexual orientation.
Genetic research
Several twin studies have been conducted to compare the importance of genetics and environment in determining sexual orientation. In a study conducted in 1991, Bailey and Pillard found homosexuality compatibility at a rate of 52% in identical male twins and 22% in fraternal twins.[24] In 2000, Bailey, Dunne, and Martin found similar results in a study on 4,901 Australian twins.[25] While they found 20% concordance in identical male twins, they found 24% concordance in identical female twins. Hershberger (2001) compared the results of 8 studies on twins with each other. In 6 out of 8 studies, identical twins appeared to have a higher rate of concordance than fraternal twins. These findings support that the effect of genetic factors on sexual orientation is important.[26]
Bearman and Brückner (2002) criticized previous studies because they included a small number of subjects[27] and the subjects were not representative of the population.[28] In the study conducted by Bearman and Brückner on 289 identical twins and 495 fraternal twins, only 7.7% of identical male twins and 5.3% of identical female twins were compatible in terms of homosexuality. As a result of the findings, it was suggested that a genetic effect independent of the social environment could not be mentioned.[27]
A study of more than 7,600 twins in Sweden in 2010 found that homosexual behavior can be explained by both genetic factors and individual environmental factors (for example, prenatal environment, illness and trauma, peer groups, and sexual experiences). The research also found that shared environmental factors, such as familial environment and community attitudes, had a weak but still significant effect. It has been observed that genetic factors have little effect on women's sexual orientation, while shared environmental factors have no effect on men's sexual orientation. According to the findings of the biometric model, genetic factors affect the sexual orientation of men by 34-39%, shared environmental factors by 0%, and individual environmental factors by 61-66%. In women's sexual orientation, genetic factors are 18-19%, shared environmental factors are 16%. -17, personal environmental factors affect 64-66%.[29]
Chromosome linkage studies on sexual orientation show the existence of many triggering genetic factors throughout the genome. In 1993, Dean Hamer and colleagues published findings on linkage analysis of 76 gay siblings and their families.[30] Hamer and colleagues found that gay men have more gay cousins and uncles on their maternal side than on their paternal side. Gay siblings showing this maternal lineage were tested for X chromosome linkage using 22 marker genes on the X chromosome. Another study found similar alleles in the distant region of Xq28 in 33 of 40 sibling pairs tested. This is significantly higher than the expected 50% for brothers. This has been called the "gay gene" by many people in the media, and has caused significant controversy. In 1998, Sanders and colleagues conducted a similar study and found that 6% of paternal uncles and 13% of maternal uncles of gay siblings were homosexual.[31]
A subsequent analysis by Hu and colleagues increased the accuracy of previous findings. This research revealed that 67% of gay siblings (new group) share a marker gene on Xq28, X chromosome.[32] Two other studies (Bailey et al., 1999; McKnight and Malcolm, 2000) found no excess of gay relatives on the maternal side of gay men.[31] In a study conducted by Rice and colleagues in 1999, no Xq28 link was found.[33] A meta-analysis of data on all chromosomal connectivity shows that there is an important link with Xq28, but also shows that sexual orientation must additionally be present in other genes in order to explain it as purely genetic. In a recent study on 894 heterosexual and 694 homosexual men, no chromosomal link was found.[34]
Mustantski (2005) scanned the whole genome of individuals, instead of scanning only the X chromosome of the families previously reported by Hamer (1993) and Hu (1995), in addition to the individuals themselves and new subjects.[35] The study found one more reduced Xq28 linkage than Hamer's findings, but found no significant markers other than 7q36, 8p12, and 10p26. Interestingly, the findings show an important indication of maternal lineage of 10q26. This supports previous family work.
In 2004, Italian researchers studied the relatives of 98 gay men and 100 heterosexual men. Female relatives of gay men were found to be more likely to have children than those of heterosexual men. In addition, it has been observed that female relatives on the mother's side of homosexual men tend to have more children than their female relatives on the father's side. Researchers concluded that a genetic material in the X chromosome, passed down from generation to generation, causes fertility in girls and homosexuality in boys.[36]
In 2010, a group at the Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology succeeded in changing a female mouse's sexual preference by removing a single gene related to reproductive behavior. In the absence of the gene, the female mouse showed a masculine sexual behavior and sexual orientation towards the urine of other female mice. Female mice protecting this gene were sexually attracted to male mice.[37]
A study conducted by Michael Bailey at Northwestern University in the USA in 2014 showed that genetic factors affect the sexual orientation of men, but are not completely determinative. In a study of 408 same-sex brother pairs and their families, it was found that homosexual men carry similar DNA markers in the Xq28 region of the X chromosome, and two chromosomes in this region affect the sexual orientation of men. This supports Dean Hamer's research done in 1993. In addition, a region called Chromosome 8 appeared to affect the sexual orientation of men. According to the findings of the study, while genetic factors play a role in 30-40 percent of male homosexuality, environmental factors are responsible for the rest. But Michael Bailey said that environmental factors do not necessarily mean socially acquired, and that everything that is not in our DNA at birth is considered environmental factors.[38]
Epigenetic research and theories

A study has found a link between a mother's genetic makeup and her sons' homosexuality. Females have two X chromosomes and one is inactivated. Bocklandt and colleagues found that mothers of gay sons had a significantly higher rate of asymmetry of X chromosome inactivation than mothers of homosexual sons. 4% of mothers who do not have a same-sex son have X chromosome inactivation While there is an asymmetry on their sides, this rate is 13% for mothers with one homosexual son, and 23% for mothers with two or more homosexual sons.[39]
During pregnancy and postpartum, the control of epi-markers over the expression of genes temporarily changes. Epi-markers are modifications of histone proteins and methyl and acetyl groups that bind to DNA histones.[40][41] It changes the function of proteins and affects the expression of genes.[42] Epi-markers are designed to help the fetus experience a normal sexual development, but may be passed on to the child during mitosis.[43] When these epi-markers are passed from father to daughter or from mother to son, they can cause adverse effects, such as feminization of some traits in men and maximizing some traits in women. The reversal of feminization and masculinization may cause a reversal in sexual preference.[44]
Prenatal hormones

The prenatal hormonal theory states that certain hormones affect a person's sexual orientation just as they play a role in the sex differentiation of the fetus. Prenatal hormones may be the main determinant of sexual orientation or may be an auxiliary factor together with genes, biological factors, environmental and social conditions.[45] It is believed that differences in brain structure influenced by hormones and genes interacting with developing brain cells are the basis of gender differences in numerous behaviors, including sexual orientation.[46] Prenatal hormones may affect the sex-typed behaivor in children.[46] This hypothesis was put forward as a result of a large number of experimental studies on mammals. The similar effects on neurobehavioral development in humans have been the subject of great debate among experts.[47] Recent studies have found evidence that prenatal exposure to androgen affects gender-appropriate behaviors in children.[47]
One of the signs of prenatal exposure is the ratio of index finger length to ring finger length. (Boys have a lower 2D;4D ratio than girls.) Independent studies have found that lesbian women have more masculine (lower) 2D;4D ratios.[48][49][50][51][52][53][ 54][55][56][57] This effect has not yet been observed in heterosexual and homosexual men.[58] However, it is controversial that these finger ratios are associated with prenatal androgens.[59] Other prenatal factors may play a role. While some studies supported this hypothesis, others did not.[59]
CAH patients (congenital adrenal hyperplasia, an autosomal recessive disease that occurs at high androgen levels while the fetus is developing) have varying levels of masculinized bodies and more masculine behaviors due to their exposure to excess androgen hormone in the womb. It is thought that the reason why men are worse at perceiving low frequency sounds and the OAE they produce at a lower level is due to their exposure to more androgen hormone in the womb. A study by Dennis McFadden (1998) found that the level of OAE produced by lesbian and bisexual women is lower (more masculine) than heterosexual women. However, no significant difference was found between heterosexual, gay and bisexual men.[62]
Blanchard and Klassen (1997) reported that each older brother increases a man's probability of being gay by approximately 33 percent of the previous brother's.[63][64] This rate is one of the most reliable epidemiological variables defined in studies on sexual orientation.[65] As a result of these findings, it has been suggested that male fetuses trigger the maternal immune system, which is strengthened as each boy gives birth. The probability of being left-wing increases in homosexual people. In a meta-analysis of previous studies[70], it was found that homosexual men are 34% more likely to be left-wing than heterosexual men, and homosexual women are almost twice (91%) more likely to be left-wing than heterosexual women.[70] Blanchard et al. (2006) linked the birth order effect with hand bias and claimed that the birth order effect was only valid for right-sided men.[71]
Neurological research

In 1991, Simon LeVay examined 4 groups of neurons in the hypothalamus, namely INAH1, INAH2, INAH3 and INAH4. In 2001, William Byne and colleagues repeated the same study on 14 HIV-positive gay men, 34 presumed heterosexual men (10 HIV-positive), and 34 presumed heterosexual women (9 HIV-positive). The researchers found that the size of INAH3 differed significantly in heterosexual men and women. Homosexual men were found to be smaller in appearance than heterosexual men and larger than heterosexual women. However, it has been determined that this difference does not have a statistical significance. Byne and colleagues also measured the weight of INAH3 and the number of its neurons. The results of INAH3's weight were similar to those of its size. The weight of INAH3 in heterosexual men was significantly higher than that of heterosexual women, while results for gay men were between heterosexual men and women. But the difference did not appear to be significant. While there were differences between men and women in the number of neurons in INAH3, no difference was found related to sexual orientation.[73]
Androstadiene (AND), which is derived from testosterone in men's sweat, and estratetraenoline (EST), which is similar to estrogen found in the urine of pregnant women, are thought to be human pheromones. In 2005, Ivanka Savic and her team found that the masculinity chemical AND activates the olfactory region of the brain of heterosexual men, and the hypothalamus region of gay men and heterosexual women. Although many studies have examined the influence of genetic, hormonal, developmental, social and cultural factors on sexual orientation, there is no evidence that allows scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by a particular factor or factors. Some of these studies may allow a better understanding of the development of sexual orientation, but do not help to find the cause or causes of sexual orientation.
Efforts to change sexual orientation
Attempts to change sexual orientation (SOCE) are methods that aim to transform homosexual or bisexual orientation into heterosexuality.[82] These efforts may include behavioral techniques (for example, reparative therapy), psychoanalytic techniques, medical approaches, and religious and spiritual approaches. These organizations include the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers in America,[85] the Royal Society of Psychiatrists,[86] and the Australian Psychological Association.[87] The Royal Society of Psychiatrists shared their concerns with the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association about the fact that organizations such as NARTH, the National Research and Therapy Association of the USA, are not supported by science and that the so-called homosexuality treatments offered by them pave the way for prejudice and discrimination.[86][88]
