Figueroa Street is a significant north-south road in Los Angeles County, California, spreading over from the Los Angeles neighborhood of Wilmington north to Eagle Rock. A short, detached continuation of Figueroa Street runs only south of Marengo Drive in Glendale to Chevy Chase Drive in La Cañada Flintridge.

The road is named for General José Figueroa (1792 - September 29, 1835), legislative head of Alta California from 1833 to 1835, who managed the secularization of the missions of California.

On "Mamba Day", August 24, 2020, then, at that point Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson and board part Curren Price reported plans to rename the fragment of Figueroa Street between Olympic Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue as Kobe Bryant Boulevard, out of appreciation for proficient b-ball player Kobe Bryant.[1]

Course portrayal

One of the more drawn out roads in the city, it runs in a north/south course for in excess of 30 miles (48 km) from its southern end at Harry Bridges Boulevard in the Wilmington neighborhood to Chevy Chase Drive in the city of La Cañada Flintridge at the north end.

From its south end at Harry Bridges Boulevard to Downtown Los Angeles, Figueroa Street runs north corresponding to the Harbor Freeway (Interstate 110) in South Los Angeles. The main piece of this fragment of Figueroa Street that lies outside Los Angeles city limits is in the city of Carson. South of the Los Angeles Financial District, Figueroa Street passes notable areas including the University of Southern California, the Los Angeles Convention Center, and Staples Center/L.A. Live.

Between Olympic Boulevard and third Street in midtown Los Angeles, Figueroa Street shapes a one-way pair with Flower Street, with northward traffic remaining on Figueroa and southward traffic redirecting to Flower.

Subsequent to going through midtown close to Bunker Hill and South Park, the southern part of Figueroa Street closes close to the overcrossing of Sunset Boulevard over the Arroyo Seco Parkway (SR 110) in Chinatown. The northern piece of the road resumes at San Fernando Road in Cypress Park. An early directing of Figueroa Street in this space was initially important for U.S. Highway 66, today a piece of the Arroyo Seco Parkway (State Route 110).[clarification needed] The prominent Figueroa Street Tunnels were once a piece of that equivalent stretch of street.

Subsequent to continuing at San Fernando Road, Figueroa keeps on running generally corresponding to the Arroyo Seco Parkway until it arrives at York Boulevard in Highland Park. A while later, it travels north to its end close to the Scholl Canyon Landfill simply past its intersection with the Ventura Freeway (State Route 134) in Eagle Rock. A short, detached continuation of Figueroa Street runs from a neighborhood only south of Marengo Drive in Glendale to end at Chevy Chase Drive directly over as far as possible line in La Cañada Flintridge.

Early guides delivered by the Automobile Club of Southern California estimated distances to Los Angeles from the club's central command at the convergence of Figueroa Street with Adams Boulevard.[2]

Figueroa was initially called Calle de los Chapules (or Grasshopper Street). Chapules (or chapul in the particular structure) isn't the standard Spanish word for grasshopper which is saltamonte. Chapul is from the Nahuatl of Durango and Nayarit (otherwise called Mexicanero) and implies grasshopper.[3] Later during the 1880s it became known as "Pearl Street". Figueroa Street initially was a couple of squares west of Pearl yet joined Pearl Street further south. Pearl Street was changed to Figueroa and the northern part of the old Figueroa Street was renamed Boylston.[4] The segment of what is currently Figueroa in Highland Park above Avenue 39 was known as "Pasadena Avenue" until Figueroa was reached out through Elysian Park. The part of what is presently Figueroa between the Los Angeles River and Avenue 39 was initially known as Dayton Avenue until the Arroyo Parkway went through.[5] Prior to development of the Harbor Freeway, Figueroa St. conveyed U.S. Highway 6 to Pacific Coast Highway south from the Four-Level Interchange.

Until 1977, the Guinness Book of Records asserted Figueroa as the longest road on the planet, in line with essayist Jay Myers, it was replaced by Yonge Street in Toronto.[6]

On April 2, 2011, a part of Figueroa Street at Jefferson Boulevard was closed off for the "Orange Carpet" and the show off for the telecom of the 2011 Kids' Choice Awards.

In South Los Angeles, Figueroa Street has the largest number of prostitution-related captures in Los Angeles.[7]

The Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Kings and Los Angeles Rams have involved Figueroa as the motorcade course for there separate titles in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2010 for the Lakers, 2012 and 2014 for the Kings and in 2022 for the Rams.[8][9]
Future
Kobe Bryant Boulevard

On August 24, 2020, then, at that point Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson and chamber part Curren Price reported plans to rename the 3-mile (4.8 km) fragment of Figueroa Street between Olympic Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue as Kobe Bryant Boulevard.[10][11] It would be renamed to pay tribute to proficient b-ball player Kobe Bryant, who alongside his little girl Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020.[12][13] The fragment of Figueroa among Olympic and Martin Luther King Jr. Street passes by the Crypto.com Arena, the home to the Los Angeles Lakers who Bryant played with all through his whole 20-year vocation and is named the "House that Kobe built".[14][15] In October 21, 2020, the vote to consider the proposition was postponed by the chamber, and another date presently can't seem to be expressed as of June 2021.[16]
"My Figueroa" improvement plan and 2028 Summer Olympics

The Metro C and J lines works a station under Interstate 105 at Figueroa Street. Metro Local Line 81 works on Figueroa Street between Colorado Boulevard and Interstate 105 and Torrance Transit Line 1 between Interstate 105 and the Harbor Gateway Transit Center. The Metro E Line has 5 stations close by. Two of which are imparted to the Metro A Line, one being a significant center point interfacing with the Metro B and D lines. Ruta

Se trata de una de las calles más largas de la ciudad, con una extensión en largo de 40 km desde su terminal sur en Harry Bridges Boulevard, en el distrito de Wilmington, hasta Chevy Chase Drive, en la ciudad de La Cañada Flintridge, al norte. Desde su extremo sur en Harry Bridges Boulevard hasta el centro de Los Ángeles, corre paralela al norte de la autopista Harbor (Interstate 110) en el sur de Los Ángeles. Al sur del distrito financiero de Los Ángeles, pasa por lugares conocidos como la Universidad del Sur de California, el Centro de Convenciones de Los Ángeles y el Staples Center. Historia

Figueroa originalmente se llamaba Calle de los Chapules (Grasshopper Street en inglés). Más tarde, en la década de 1880, se conoció como "Pearl Street", Calle Perla en español. El proyecto Figueroa Corridor Streetscape es un esfuerzo liderado por la ciudad para embellecer y mejorar el bulevar al agregar servicios amigables para peatones. El proyecto de embellecimiento comenzó en la 7ma calle en el centro de Los Ángeles, por el Staples Center y termina en Exposition Park en la USC. El proyecto comenzó en 2017 y se completó a fines de 2018. Su objetivo era mejorar el tránsito y el acceso peatonal, carriles para bicicletas protegidos totalmente protegidos por barreras físicas, una calle más organizada y eficiente al agregar una mejor señalización y señalización, cruces peatonales de alta visibilidad, plataformas de tránsito, más árboles callejeros, arte público y aceras más anchas.3​ El proyecto de $ 20 millones de Figueroa Corridor Streetscape fue financiado por una subvención de la Proposición 1C.4​
